Painting Myself is a Challenge

Today I spent a few hours in the studio finally tackling what I'd been avoiding--painting my face. As a painter comfortable with portraits, I still find it difficult to portray myself. I've been using a photo my friend Sarah took of me and our friend Max in the Swiss Alps as the inspiration for this painting. I'm still not finished painting my face as I plan on adding some more detailed layers once the oil paint dries a bit, but I thought I'd share a bit of my process to give you an idea of how I begin an area. First I block out the color and shape with larger brushes, then I continue to refine detail by adding layers with smaller brushes. The beginning of a portrait always freaks me out a little bit, but as you can see I slowly come to life... painting process by Taylor Browning
