Today I started working on a commission as part of my Paintings of Home series for a family friend who asked if I could paint her father's childhood home. She sent me a couple very old black and white photos, one of which I chose to use as the source image because of its Texas country home feel. After opening a fresh, blank canvas this afternoon, I played with various combinations of colors and laid down the underpainting. I decided to start with french ultramarine blue for the sky, a muted yellow for the structures, a darker shade of the yellow for contrast, and then blended the yellows and blue for the grass and trees. I think I will try to stick with these three colors and see what happens. Next I will begin adding layers of paint and detail. Here is the source image for the painting...more to come soon!
